Learn to Row
HRCR currently offers regular Learn to Row (LTR) programs in the spring and summer.
Each Learn To Row program has approximately 15 sessions over the course of five weeks and covers the basics of fun and safe rowing, including safe equipment handling, terminology, and the fundamentals of the sport. No prior rowing experience is necessary, and all adults 18+ who meet the requirements listed below are eligible to participate. Please note that Row New York offers programming for youth athletes; they are located nearby at the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Inwood.
All sessions launch from our shared dock at Muscota Marsh in Inwood (northern Manhattan). After successful completion of LTR, participants are able to participate in the open Masters Rowing.
LTR Registration Instructions:
Please fill out HRCR's 2025 Registration Form and Waiver and Release. This will place you on the email list to receive more information about 2025 Learn to Row programming, and is required to attend a Get-on-the-Water day.
Requirements:
Participants interested in Learn to Row programs must attend a “Get-on-the-Water” day prior to applying to participate in a LTR program.
Participants of Learn To Row programs commit to attending every session in the course.
HRCR warmly welcomes most fitness levels, but in order to safely participate in LTR, participants will need to be able to swim, do a squat, and lift 30 pounds overhead.
Once accepted into a LTR program, participants must complete all requirements for new rowers listed under Rower Resources.
HRCR is volunteer-driven and the only adult rowing program in New York City. To make our programs as accessible as possible, all HRCR programming is free of cost to participants. On average, participation in one session costs HRCR about $15 (equipment, insurance, coaching), and we rely on donations to cover these expenses. If you are able, please consider donating here.
